To make it easier to get homeowners insurance or evaluating what you have, creating a thorough home inventory and updating it every few months is advised.
You should walk around your home with a video camera or smart phone recording everything in your home (including inside drawers) and providing commentary on the items as you go. There are also apps or pen and paper that you can use to create the inventory.
Once completed, store the inventory in a fire-resistant container, in a locked cabinet at your workplace, with a close friend, lawyer, accountant, or in a safety deposit box.
How often should you update your inventory:
- When the square footage increases
- When there are renovations
- When security increases
- When someone moves in or out
- When they get a new dog
- When acquiring or selling an expensive asset
- When deciding to start a business or retire
We also suggest you send a copy of your inventory to us so that we can keep it on file for you.
