Mother’s Day honors the mother of the family or individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May and started as a women’s movement to better the lives of other Americans.
Three women – Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Ann’s daughter, Anna M. Jarvis created the national holiday. In 1907, Anna memorialized her mother’s lifelong activism with a memorial service held at the Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Every year after that on the second Sunday in May, mothers are honored whether living or deceased.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill designating the second Sunday in May as a legal holiday called Mother’s Day – dedicated “to the best mother in the world, your mother.”
