We’re in the midst of summer and seeing record temperatures.  It is important that we remind workers on the danger of working in the heat.

OSHA has an extensive campaign dealing with this subject.  Their safety message is WATER, REST, SHADE.

Under OSHA law, employers are responsible for providing safe workplaces.  And, that includes from the heat.  A complete heat illness prevention program should include:

  • Providing workers with water, rest and shade.
  • Allowing new or returning workers to gradually increase workloads and take more frequent breaks as they acclimatize, or build a tolerance for working in the heat.
  • Creating a plan for emergencies and train workers on prevention.
  • Monitoring workers for signs of illness.

Component of the OSHA campaign feature posters in English and Spanish covering topics such as:

  • Prevent Heat Illness at Work
  • Heat Exposure Can be Dangerous
  • Heat Illness Signs and Systems

Armed with these training pieces, you can help your employees recognize heat symptoms and how to treat them.
